Barry Gray

Barry Gray was a member of the City of Blacktown Pipe Band (previously known as St John’s Ambulance Brigade Pipes & Drums) from 1977 and the Musical Director and Pipe Major from 1994 – 2006. The band was in Grade 1 for the entire duration of his time as Pipe Major. The band also had ‘feeder’ bands in Grade 3, Grade 4 and Juvenile. He lead the Blacktown Pipe Band in competitions, in Scotland in 1992, 1995, 1998 and 2006. In Indonesia on 9 occasions and New Zealand on 8 occasions.

He was an Australian Representative at the McCallum Trophy Invitational Contest in Lorient, France in 1999.

He has competed in Scotland as a ‘guest’ player in Grade 1 with the following bands:

  • 1986: Dysart & Dundonald Pipe Band (PM R.T.Shepherd)

  • 1994: Dysart & Dundonald Pipe Band (PM Davy Barnes)

  • 2008: New Zealand Police Pipe Band (PM Iain Robertson)

  • 2009: Fife Constabulary ( PM J. Murray )

And as tutor or Pipe Major with following bands that competed outside of Australia:

  • 2010: The Hawkesbury Nepean Valley Pipe Band – Grades 4 and Juvenile – Scotland d and Ireand

  • 2012: The Hawkesbury Nepean Valley Pipe Band – Grade 4 – Scotaland

  • 2013: The Hawkesbury Nepean alley Pipe band – Grade 3 – SIngapore

  • 2015: The Sri Desmash Sikh Pipe band from Malaysia – Grade 4B (who won the World G4 Championships in 2019) – Scotlad

  • 2017: The Governor Macquarie Memorial Pipe Band – Grade 3A – Scotland

  • 2018: Murrumba Pipe Band Qld (Mid Section tutor & Piper) – Scotland

He has been tutor of the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley Pipe Band since 2008 and Pipe Major since 2011 which has now become the Governor Macquarie Memorial Pipe Band.

They were Grade 4 Australian and South Pacific Champions in 2014.

  • 2023: Was a member of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Ope & Drums performing at the Tattoo in Edinburgh, Scotland

The Hawkesbury Nepean Valley Pipe Ban at the 2014 Australian Championships who won the Grade 4 Australian and South Pacific Championships with 30 Pipers, 1 Bass, 11 Tenors and 8 Snares.
