The Flourishing Tenor Drum

Learning to play the Flourishing Tenor Drum

At the SSPD, tenor drum lessons are offered in group or individual settings. Students start with a pair of drum beaters, available for purchase, and learn rhythm patterns and basic swings. With weekly lessons and home practice, students progress to mastering massed band scores and attending band practices. As proficiency grows, students may join a pipe band, where they’re provided with drums and uniforms. Principal Tenor Drum Tutor, Mr. Michael Smith, brings extensive experience, including accolades like Young Australasian Tenor Drummer of the Year in 2011 and competing at the World Championships.

Tenor Drum Lesson Options

At the SSPD, students have the choice of group or individual lessons. Group sessions are held weekly at Vineyard on Mondays from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, priced at AUD$15 per week. Individual one-on-one lessons are also available, either in person or via Zoom, with rates starting at AUD$60 for a 30-minute session.

Getting Started

To begin learning the flourishing tenor drum, students need a pair of drum beaters, which cost approximately AUD$99 a pair. These specialized drum sticks, available from www.berlsatrading.com.au, feature laces attached at one end for twirling or swinging.

Fundamentals of Drumming

Lessons focus on mastering rhythm patterns essential for pipe band music. Students learn basic swings typical of tenor drummers in massed band style settings, with instruction including mirror work to ensure correct technique.

Progress and Mastery

Mastering basic massed band scores in various time signatures prepares students for band practices and performance on the drum. With consistent practice, typically around 30 minutes daily for 4 to 6 months, students progress to more complex rhythms and flourishes.

Joining a Band

As proficiency improves, students may join a pipe band, supplied with a drum and uniform. Mr. Michael Smith, the principal Tenor Drum Tutor, brings a wealth of experience, having achieved recognition as Young Australasian Tenor Drummer of the Year and competed at the World Championships.
